Students nabbed with fake currency notes

Two youths were nabbed with counterfeit currency notes worth Rs 20,000 near Sector 42 lake on Friday. The operations cell of the Chandigarh Police arrested 26-year-old Amardeep Singh and 23-year-old Pargatjot Singh with the notes late this evening. Both are students and come from well-off families of Amritsar,the police said.

Police said preliminary investigation revealed the two made fake currency notes with help of computer,scanner and printer and had recently started using them in the market.

The operations cell had laid a naka near the Sector 42 lake at 8 pm when they noticed two youths walking towards their direction. Seeing the men in khaki,the two turned back and hurried away,one of them was carrying a CPU.

The police chased them and recovered counterfeit currency notes of Rs 50 and 100 denominations from them. “We noticed that the colour of the notes was slightly different and all were of the same number,” said Inspector Malkiat Singh. A total of 14 notes of Rs 100 denomination and 323 fake notes of Rs 50 denomination were recovered from their possession,the police said.

“They told us they had manufactured the notes for the first time and it was only some weeks ago that they had started using them,” Inspector Singh said.

The police have registered a case under Section 489 C and 489 D of the IPC. Both the accused will be produced in court tomorrow.

Giving details of the two,police said both are students of BTech. While Amardeep has completed his studied,Pargatjot is in his final year at Baba Koma Singh Engineering College in Amritsar. They have been staying as paying guests in Mohali for the last one month,since Amardeep was taking IELTS coaching and Pargatjot had enrolled in a net designing course.

Amardeep’s father is the owner of a poultry farm and Pargatjot’s father is a teacher.
