The PhD, MSc and BSc (current and pass outs) students of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana began their indefinite protest Wednesday at Gate No. 1 of the university against the alleged unfulfilled promises of the AAP government to fill vacant government posts of agriculture officers and masters (teachers who teach the agriculture subject in government schools).

The students also marched from the library and protested in front of Thapar Hall, which houses the Vice-Chancellor’s office.

Student leaders of the PAU Students Association (PAUSA) said before coming to power, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had promised that after coming to power, he would appoint masters of agriculture in villages and fill the vacant posts in the agriculture department, but “even after three years of the AAP coming to power, those posts have not been filled”.

“Therefore, the unemployed sons and daughters of Punjab with agricultural degrees have appealed to the Punjab government to save them. To employ qualified agriculture students, the vacant posts in the Agriculture Department, Mandi Board, Horticulture Department, MARKFED, PUNSEED and other related departments should be filled immediately,” they said.

“Students have already met ministers, including Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, Harpal Cheema, and Aman Arora, several times, at least seventeen times to be precise, but the government has not taken any steps in this direction, dashing students’ hopes. We have been forced to start an indefinite protest, and students from the country’s top agricultural university were forced to sit on the streets,” said Harman Mann, a student leader.

The student leaders said the protest would continue until the government issues a notification to start hiring in the agriculture and other related departments.
