Students’ agitation: Congress MLA sits on hunger strike at protest site

In a show of solidarity with agitating students of Chaudhary Charan Singh (CCS) Agricultural University in Hisar, Narnaund Congress MLA Jassi Petwar observed a day-long hunger strike in front of the university on Thursday.

The students have been protesting since June 10, following an alleged assault by university officials and security personnel during their demonstration against changes to the stipend criteria for postgraduate and doctoral scholars.

With senior leaders from across parties visiting the protest site, support for the students continues to grow.

While senior INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala and Congress MP from Churu (Rajasthan) Rahul Kaswan visited the dharna site in Hisar, former deputy CM Dushyant Chautala met students at the university’s College of Agriculture in Bawal.

The students have now called for a ‘Justice for Students’ mahapanchayat in Hisar on June 24, inviting farmers, employees, and traders to join their cause.

Their demands include action against those involved in the alleged assault and the removal of vice-chancellor BR Kamboj.

Meanwhile, Rajbir Garg, director of research and head of the university’s committee to address the issues of the students, claimed that all students’ demands have already been resolved.

He urged the students to remain vigilant against those allegedly trying to politicise the situation.

Following the complaint, police arrested assistant professor Radhey Shyam on June 14 and booked seven others, including Registrar Pawan Kumar and chief security officer Sukhbir Singh.

The university administration has also accused students of forcefully attempting to enter the V-C’s office and residence and of assaulting security personnel on June 10.
