With the improving weather conditions, the Indian Air Force helicopter MI-17 airlifted 64 people to Chamba through four sorties Saturday, officials said, adding that they were stranded in Bharmour while on Manimahesh Yatra.

In all, 588 individuals were airlifted from Bharmour to Chamba in the last two days.

The Chamba district administration sent all the rescued pilgrims to their respective destinations through HRTC buses, free of cost.

Besides, mortal remains of two individuals were also airlifted to Chamba, officials said.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu appreciated the efforts of the district administration, NDRF, SDRF, Chamba Police, Home Guards, NGOs and individuals who worked relentlessly to accomplish this massive rescue operation.

The CM said the people of Chamba, who organised langars for the stranded people, have shown the true spirit of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’.

He also praised the Revenue Minister, Jagat Singh Negi, for leading the operation on the ground who camped at Bharmour. The CM said that the minister reached Bharmour on foot from Chamba and ensured the safety of each stranded person.
