State pumps out water from Lambi,floods other villages

The state irrigation department’s decision to pump out water from flooded farms in Lambi constituency and release it in Bhavala drain has led to widespread criticism as the released water has now flooded the farms in Balluana and Abohar villages.

Farmers from the villages claim that nearly 3,000 acres of standing crop has come under water now.

According to the information available,water from some sem drains,namely Abul Khurana,Saranvan,Bodla,Malaut and Maniana Wala,was pumped into the Bhavala drain,which has resulted to flooding of Abohar and Ballauna villages.

Sri Ram Bishnoi,a resident of Daba Khokri village said: “Our villages were safe,but after the irrigation department started pumping out water from Lambi villages,we have suffered damages. Even if the drain out all the water,the crop in Lambi villages can’t be saved. But to save a few hundred acres,they have flooded thousands of acres of standing crops”.

Cheif Agriculture officer,Ferozepur B S Chahal confirmed that more more than 3000 acres of land in Abohar and Balluana have been flooded after water was pumped out from Lambi area. He added that the area may increase.

SS Brar,former Sarpanch of Bahadurkhera in Balluana constituency,said: “Some Fazilka and Ferozepur villages have been facing the flood fury for long. However,Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has provided the pumps only to Lambi farmers. This is not justified”.

Sandeep Godara,Sarpanch of village Sardarpura,added that the water level is increasing even as more than four feet deep water is standing in the fields.

Abohar MLA Sunil Jakhar who visited the flooded areas,said,“The state government did not utilise the Rs 131-crore fund meant for the up keep of the sem drains. The drains are overflowing as they have not been cleaned.”

Executive engineer Gulshan Nagpal,however,expressed helplessness at the whole situation. “Water from fields had to be pumped out. We cannot help it.”
