(Express Photo) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s announcement of sops for government school teachers evoked mixed reactions on Tuesday, with many welcoming the decisions taken, while some stating that more could have been done.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mann announced permanent employment for all contract teachers who have been working in the state for the past ten years. During a video address on Tuesday evening, the CM shared that the state government plans to notify a special cadre specifically for these teachers shortly after the annual vacations.
EGS AIE, STR Teachers Union president, Harpreet Kaur, on Tuesday after the CM’s announcement said that she was very happy. She claimed that she had been working on a salary of Rs 6,000 per month so far, which after the CM’s Tuesday announcement will now be increased to Rs 18,000 per month. “I got a call from the Punjab CM and he spoke to me about this enhancement before making the announcement officially. It is a big thing that the CM of a state personally reached out to us, listened to us and is trying to resolve our issues. I am hopeful that all our remaining issues are resolved in the coming times,” she said.
President of Sikhya Provider Teachers Union Punjab, Ajmer Singh Aulakh, on the other hand said, “Although we have not been regularized, the announcement by the Punjab CM provides us with three things — job security, enhanced salary, and a 5% annual increase in salary, along with other benefits. We hope that the government will soon regularize us on the lines of government teachers.”
Nishant Kumar, an elementary teacher training and nursery teacher training teacher and member of the 11-member state committee of Kancche (Temporary) Teacher Union Punjab, welcomed the government’s decision. Kumar stated that his salary will now increase from Rs 6,000 to Rs. 18,000 per month. He said, “The Punjab government recently decided to regularize 6,400 teachers, and we hope that we too are regularized in the future. At least this government has increased our salary, which was very low. We had to earlier take up other odd jobs just to survive.”
Surinder Kumar Puari, the president of Government School Teachers Union Punjab and convener of Sanjha Adhyapak Morcha Punjab, however, accused the government of cheating teachers in the name of increasing salaries.
He stated that they have been working for the past 15-18 years, and during their protests in Mohali, the then AAP candidate and now minister, Anmol Gagan Mann, had visited them and got them an assurance from AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal that they would be regularized.
Navpreet Singh Balli, a member of Government Teacher Union Vegyanik-Punjab, pointed out that the promise was for regularization, and the government has not announced anything for the non-teaching staff, such as mid-day workers and others.
