Sing Along

The stage was all set at the Law Auditorium in Panjab University on Tuesday.

Ex-student and lyricist Irshad Kamil gives Panjab University its own official anthem

The stage was all set at the Law Auditorium in Panjab University (PU) on Tuesday. The occasion was the medal distribution ceremony where the medalists were lined up,dressed in their best with a glow of pride. But their was one person, whose happiness was of another level. Lyricist Irshad Kamil, who passed out 15 years back was there to see the medalists sing the official PU anthem titled Shhan-o-Shaukat,which has been penned by him. Kamil has penned lyrics for films like Socha Na Tha,Chameli,Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal. “It seems just like yesterday, when I was pursuing PhD in Hindi and now here I am holding a prestigious place by penning the official anthem for my alma mater,” says Kamil,as he takes a seat at the auditorium for the glittering award ceremony.

The track that has been sung by Sukhwinder Singh and composed by Sandesh Shandilya was released in a CD today at the University. It has been penned by the lyricist and selected by Panjab University after a contest.

“I was browsing through the website of Panjab University when I got to know about the contest and instantly knew that it was time to express love and gratitude for my alma mater with this song,” says Kamil. Kamil looks on as students are busy rehearsing lines of the song. “I’ve got inputs from Pritam and AR Rehman for the song,” says Kamil,as he reads out his favourite lines from the anthem to a group of students — pankh bina parwaz sikhata, jeevan pustak roz parhata.

Kamil says his memoirs are woven in the anthem and sums up his seven years of stay at PU,“I come here for inspiration,be it for romantic songs, patriotic songs or for lyrics for my movies,” says Kamil, who is here every two months. He loves spending time at Stucee and drives back with a new song.

He adds that the lyrics for upcoming movies like Rock Star,Mausam,Agent Vinod and Desi Boys too have been inspired from this place. “Every single word of my song is an experience that I had sitting on these wooden benches,” says Kamil. He hopes that through his song,PU’s legacy will remain immortal.
