Irked over the non-filing of responses, despite repeated opportunities given, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday issued show cause notices to the Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner,Municipal Corporation,Chandigarh. The duo have been asked to explain why contempt proceedings not be initiated against them for wilful disobedience of court orders.
The contempt notices were issued during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) emanating from a suo motu notice taken by the High Court on a news item published in The Indian Express. The PIL pertains to introducing eco-cabs in Chandigarh. The issue of ignoring rickshaw stands and converting them into taxi stands had also arisen on the last date of hearing in the High Court. The UT Administration and Municipal Corporation were asked to file their responses in this regard.
Despite over half a dozen adjournments granted, the Administration failed to submit its response in the court.
