SGPC delegation to meet PM today

A five-member delegation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC),led by its president jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar,will call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday to discuss the issue of threat to the lives of Sikhs living in Kashmir.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal,who was in town to attend the 10th death anniversary of Mohinder Kaur,wife of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar,announced this on Sunday.

A path was held in the memory of the departed soul. Jathdera,Akal Takht,Giani Gurbachan Singh,minister Gulzar Singh Ranike,Hira Singh Gabria; D S Cheema; Kirpal Singh Badungar and other Akali leaders,too,attended the function.

Badal informed that leader of the Akali parliamentary party Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa will be part of the delegation. Badal said,“I have already discussed the issue with the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on telephone twice last week. I have asked him to ensure full safety of the Sikhs in the state. The chief minister also expressed apprehension that any untoward incident against the Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir might produce a backlash in Punjab .

Badal said: “People from different religions live in all states and it’s the duty of the state government to ensure that all its residents get to practice their way of life in peace. Our party MPs will also raise the issue in both the houses of the Parliament tomorrow.”

On the issue of floods in the state and release of Govind Sagar (Bhakra ) additional water into the Sutlej,Badal assured that,“there was no need to panic as the government was fully conscious of its implications and is keeping a close watch on the situation. “The drainage department and all the other departments are fully prepared to meet any eventuality if it does happen,” he said.
