The district police were on their toes after they received a telephone call that serial bomb blasts will rock Mohali and its surrounding areas on Sunday evening. But after a thorough search and investigations, the call turned out to be a hoax.
Confirming the report,Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar told Newsline that around 5 pm,a local Police Control Room (PCR) received a call on its toll-free 100 telephone line. The caller, who identified himself as Girdhari, informed that bombs had been planted at different places in Mohali and Balongi and Barmajra villages. On being confronted where exactly the bombs were planted, the caller refused to divulge any more details. Instead,he asked us to check it out on our own and disconnected the line, Bhullar said.
Immediately, the entire district police force was put on high alert and parties, including bomb disposal squads, were rushed to the suspected places but nothing incriminating was found during the thorough search and investigations, which continued even till the filing of this report at 10 pm . The SSP said so far the call had turned out to be a hoax but still close vigil was being kept across the district, especially in the crowded public places, religious places and public installations. We have intensified the patrolling and special check-posts were screening the movement of suspected elements in the district, revealed Bhullar.
He said the call was traced to a cellphone, which was found to be issued in the name of a resident of Mauli Jagran in Chandigarh ,whom the police were interrogating.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that the caller also told the PCR attendant that since his brother was convicted in a terrorism case,he had resorted to planting bombs to express his anger against it.
Sources added that the mobile phone owner has told the police that his phone was missing since Saturday and since his wife was admitted in hospital,he could not lodge a police complaint. The tower location of the callers number, which was switched off after the hoax call, was traced to Chandigarh.
