City schools have given thumbs up to the new rule by the Central Board of Secondary Education under which students will look after the heritage of the city. Schools feel that considering the rich architectural history of the city, students will be well versed with its history once the rule is implemented.
Under its Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation Programme,CBSE has asked its affiliated schools across the country to adopt heritage structures and involve students for their preservation.
This will be besides the social science projects undertaken by students of Class X. Schools will tie up with the UT Administration to adopt various structures in the city. Delhi Public School principal Reema Dewan said: Chandigarh has a rich history and the new rule will help students understand the legacy they have inherited from the city. Those who work on the project will have an edge over other students in terms of better grades.
The project will encompass theoretical lessons,extra-curricular activities like quiz, seminars and exhibitions.
There is so much to learn from the citys monuments including Rock Garden,Open Hand; each has a story to its own. The temptation of scoring better marks will generate interest among students to know about the city, said HS Mamik, chairman,Vivek High School.
Schools believe that the current generation takes whatever is inherited by them for granted and this exercise will teach them to respect the heritage. Besides enriching their historical knowledge, this would also open new career avenues for students.
Many children are fascinated by buildings and their structure. Studying the heritage keenly will help them develop interest in architecture as a vocation, said Dr Rakesh Sachdeva, principal,DAV Model School ,Sector 15.
