The National Commission for Scheduled Castes would probe charges relating to the embezzlement of government funds meant for the development of Punjab’s border areas,Vice Chairman,Raj Kumar Verka, said on Saturday.

Directions have been issued to Amritsar and Tarn Taran DCs and Inspector General,Border Range,to submit proceeding reports within a week’s period on complaints in the matter.

Public funds were allegedly misappropriated by the former personal assistant of Gulzar Singh Ranike,a minister who resigned on September 16 citing “moral grounds” in the wake of the controversy.

“It is highly unfortunate that Sarbdayal,Personal Assistant of Ranike, misused the public funds while depositing the money in dummy bank accounts and later got it cashed for personal reasons,” Verka claimed.

More than 100 complaints had been received by the Commission from Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts as real beneficiaries were allegedly denied help,he said.
