In a significant development, Satnam Singh Sandhu, a well-known educationist and the son of a farmer, was nominated for membership in the Rajya Sabha by the President on Tuesday.

Satnam Singh Sandhu, who faced educational challenges in his earlier life, transformed his journey into a remarkable story of success. Beginning with the establishment of Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) at Landran in Mohali in 2001, he furthered his commitment to education by founding Chandigarh University in 2012. The latter achieved a notable position in the QS World Rankings 2023, ranking first among private universities in Asia.

Beyond his contributions to education, Sandhu, now the Chancellor of Chandigarh University, has emerged as a philanthropist. Sandhu actively engages in community initiatives to enhance health and wellness. Through his NGOs, namely the ‘Indian Minorities Foundation’ and the ‘New India Development (NID) Foundation,’ he has played a pivotal role in fostering communal harmony. His efforts also extend to national integration, both domestically and with the Indian diaspora abroad.

Reacting to Sandhu’s nomination, PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “I am delighted that the President has nominated Satnam Singh Sandhu to the Rajya Sabha. Satnam Singh Sandhu has distinguished himself as a noted educationist and social worker, who has been serving people at the grassroots in different ways. He has always worked extensively to further national integration and has also worked with the Indian diaspora. I wish him the very best for his Parliamentary journey and am confident the Rajya Sabha proceedings will be enriched by his views.”
