The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) has hit upon a novel idea to reach the masses in the rural areas – its vote bank – ahead of the Assembly elections. The party has planned to launch a legal literacy mission to make aware the electorate about the right to vote. Its workers would also propagate the party policies.

“We have to cover 12,000 villages. Apart from distributing folders and leaflets, our paralegal workers would motivate the masses and awaken them about their right to vote and also tell them about the development works done by the present regime,” Harpreet Singh Brar, president of the SAD legal cell, said.

The cell has already started appointing paralegal workers in rural areas. The emphasis of the legal literacy mission,to be formally launched by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on December 23,is to garner as many votes as possible through one-to-one interaction.

Brar, who chaired a meeting of the legal cell workers in Ludhiana on Monday, also appointed some members of the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) in the legal wing.

“A ‘clinic’ was set up in Khanna recently in which we trained our paralegal workers. More such clinics would be held,” Brar said.

Queried whether,it was a part of the election campaign,Brar said,“This is an ongoing process of the party. In fact, the legal wing became active only in July.”
