(Express file photo)Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia’s Z + security cover was withdrawn by Punjab Police in a sudden move while he was travelling to another state last Saturday.
A senior police officer informed that orders were received to withdraw the entire complement of gunmen and vehicles which were part of Majithia’s security. The security personnel were ordered to leave the city where Majithia was visiting with his family immediately and return and report to their parent units to which they belonged.
Sources inform that there were also instructions that photographs should be taken of the security personnel once they report back to their battalions and passed on to senior officers. Bikram Majithia was left with one police personnel who was attached with him for long while the 35-odd security personnel left the spot within minutes, leaving him unguarded.
Sources say that till recently, senior Punjab Police officers had been seeking heightened security measures at the Chandigarh residence of Majithia, including increasing the height of the perimeter walls, installation of barbed wires atop walls and net to screen off any grenade lobbed inside the house.
A letter had been written by Punjab Police to the Haryana and Delhi police forces during the last hearing of Majithia regarding his case in Supreme Court informing them that he would be travelling by road and should be provided with pilot vehicle and security during his transit and stay.
Bikram Singh Majithia was provided Z+ security in 2010 during the rule of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in the Centre. This decision was based on a threat perception assessment and was cleared by then Home Minister P Chidambaram.
The security cover was granted following threats from gangsters and anti-social elements, including those based abroad. Majithia has reportedly been getting threats for himself, his wife and children till recently from gangsters based in Pakistan, USA and other countries.
