Protect my unborn child or permit me to kill myself, requested a seven-month pregnant woman to the Punjab and Haryana High Court today. Reason: 19-year-old Reena and her husband are being hounded by their family members for marrying against their wishes. So much so that the woman in her petition has categorically alleged that her parents and relatives have even chased her till the high court in a bid to kill her.
Coming to the rescue of the couple,Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal directed the state of Haryana to provide adequate security to the couple and take complete care of the woman. Notices have been issued to Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) and relatives of the couple.
The office of the Haryana Advocate General has reportedly shot off a letter to the Panchkula superintendent of police directing him to offer medical assistance to the woman as and when required. Till the next hearing, scheduled for February 26,the couple will live in a police quarter in Police Lines,Panchkula.
Advocate Jasbir Mor,counsel for Reena, made an urgent request before the chief justice after lunch for police protection. Mor contended that relatives of Reena were waiting outside the court to kill her and her husband.
Reena and Anil, both residents of Jind, got married on August 4,2009,in Nagpur against the wishes of their families. The family had apparently objected to the marriage on the ground that the two (boy and girl) are distant relatives.
On February 12,Reenas father, who is the president of the Punia Khap Panchayat in Haryana, lodged an FIR against Anil accusing him of abducting Reena.
The couple approached the High Court seeking protection and the petition finally came up for hearing on Friday. The petition was argued by some other counsel and the court concerned was not inclined to award relief to the couple because the husband is 19 years of age. The couple withdrew the petition and approached me, Mor told Newsline. The advocate immediately approached the chief justice after lunch and sought protection. Chief Justice Mudgal immediately granted protection and directed the state to ensure the couples life and liberty.
