The Panchkula Municipal Corporation (PMC) has failed to repair broken roads in the city. Despite the preparation of estimates of repair works some two to three months back, the work has not been started yet. Due to the delay in the repairs the commuters are facing inconveniences and pot-holed roads are a common scene on city roads.
Not only is the condition of roads in the outskirts of Sector 21 and Sector 20 pathetic, but broken roads are also a common scene in the posh areas like Sector 6 and Sector 7. Though the Corporation has prepared the estimates for repairs but due to the delay in approvals no work is going on for the last three months.
Elected corporator,CB Goel, said that estimates have been prepared on the repair of roads in Sector 8 and Sector 7 some two months back, but work is yet to start. He said that officials prepared the estimates for the repairs of Sector 8 and the expenses were pegged at Rs 1.21 crore, adding that in Sector 7 the estimates of Rs 2 crore were prepared by PMC officials. He,however, said that despite the estimates the work was yet to be started in both the sectors.
In the 12-A area the condition of roads is particularly worse and besides pot-holed roads, the main roads also needs repairs. President of citizens welfare association,Panchkula,S K Nayar, said that the association took up the matter with the Corporation officials many times but they have failed to act. He said that since the Corporation has recently took over charge, the work has not caught momentum.
PMC Commissioner,SS Phulia, said the matter will be looked into. Goel said that the delay was also due to the fact that works that incur an expenditure of more than
Rs 1 crore have to be approved by the Chief Minister.
He said that due to the procedural delay works havent started yet. Nayar added that the pot-holed roads were also responsible for the accidents. People riding bikes and scooters particularly have a tough time passing through these areas. Even the dividing roads between the sectors and those around roundabouts are also in a bad shape, he said.
