Retired Col’s wife murdered in Panchkula
The crime took place in the afternoon and the police suspect it is the handiwork of a former caretaker

In a horrific crime, a retired colonel’s wife was murdered at their house in Sector 2, Panchkula on Wednesday afternoon.
Three unidentified assailants attacked the retired Col RK Sharma, his wife, Sushila and their caretaker, Ramkali with sharp objects between 12:14 pm and 1:19 pm, leading to Sushila’s death. The retired army officer from the EME regiment and the caretaker suffered grievous injuries. The 87-year-old colonel, who suffers from Parkinson’s, is undergoing a surgery at the Ojas Hospital. The helper is in an unconscious state at the civil hospital sector-6, Panchkula.
It was around five to six months back that the colonel had fired a caretaker. He and his three friends allegedly intruded into the house, and started attacking the couple. When their present helper tried to inform the police, she was also hit with a sharp object.
The couple’s driver alerted the police, which reached the spot around 1:30- 1:35 pm. Panchkula Police Commissioner Sibash Kabiraj, DCP Sumer Pratap Singh, DCP Surinder Pal Singh, DCP (Crime) Mukesh Malhotra also rushed to the spot.
Dr Anuradha Sharma, the couple’s daughter, was away to work at the time of the incident .
The murder has sent shock waves in the city. “Panchkula has never witnessed such a gory crime, that too in broad daylight. It just shows the perilous state of law and order in this city,” lamented Subhash Chhabra, President, Association, Sector-2 Panchkula.
“It is a worrisome situation for us. It has been so many years of us living in this area and we have never even heard of such a crime, let alone witness it. It is very shocking for us,” said a retired colonel living in the sector as he pointed to footprints in blood at the entrance to the house.
ACP Surendar DY said raids are on to nab the culprits. “I request residents to ensure they get the antecedents of caretakers or maids from the local police before hiring.” He said the police are studying the footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the house and neighbourhood, and hope to apprehend the culprits soon.
