The idea about spreading awareness among residents about segregation of waste at source was mooted in the MC House on Monday during discussions regarding appropriate methods of waste disposal.
On the agenda item of purchasing garbage containers, councillors stated that several times garbage is seen strewn around the bins. They also demanded tighter control over the door-to-door garbage collectors.
Medical Officer of Health Dr G Dewan said the bylaws have been drafted and once approved,it would solve problems related to garbage disposal.
Councillor Arshad Khan put forth the idea that segregation of waste is important and for this, the garbage collectors need to be made aware.
At present, waste from slaughter houses, organic waste and e-waste is going to the dumping ground. There has to be a check on this, Khan said. Councillor Pam Rajput also favoured the proposal.
Highlighting the fact that the problem is graver in villages, councillor Bhupinder Singh Badheri said bins are usually kept outside the villages and this causes problems of insanitation. Smaller bins should be made available to residents in the villages, he suggested.
On the issue of waste segregation,Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria said: Enforcement would be difficult but there is a need to create awareness among residents. The segregation has to be at the source. If residents maintain separate bins for disposing bio-degradable and non-biodegradable waste,we could also keep separate bins at public places.
He added that the company managing the garbage processing plant has been directed to segregate garbage when they receive it.
