Amid reports that hefty sum was paid by a few medical students for admission in higher studies in the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER),the authorities have decided to verify the credentials of all resident doctors in the hospital.There are over 1,000 resident doctors in the PGI currently and authorities are likely to begin the verification process shortly.
All departments have been asked to validate credentials of junior and senior residents in the hospital, official spokesperson of the PGIMER Manju Wadwalkar said. All necessary orders have been issued and the process will begin immediately.
Sources said degree certificates of resident doctors pursuing postgraduate in various medical streams are likely to be checked as part of the whole verification exercise. And in case of any doubt,the hospital authorities are likely to take up the issue with the law enforcing agency.
Every year over 200 junior residents take admission in various departments and most of their courses end within two or three years. Once the doctors complete their PG degrees,some among them qualify for the senior residency in specialised branches.
And now amid reports about touts playing role in the admission process,the credibility of the countrys best health institute is at stake and the authorities have decided to fully cooperate with any investigating agency to reach up to the bottom of the allegations that have surfaced.
If at all the allegations about middle men playing role in the admissions process are true,we need to expose those black sheep involved in the racket, said a doctor at the hospital. After all,the credibility of one of the best institutes is at stake. We will fully cooperate with the investigating agency on the issue.
