Coming down heavily on the Punjab government for deploying more police officers and personnel than what was sanctioned in Moga, the Election Commission (EC) has issued directions that the excess force should be immediately transferred. In all likelihood, former Director General of Police P S Gill will contest 2012 Assembly elections from Moga constituency.
According to sources, three DSPs,two SPs and 10 inspectors have been posted over and above the sanctioned posts in Moga. In a recent meeting with the state government officials,Deputy Election Commissioner Dr Alok Shukla had recommended that these officers be immediately transferred and only officers on sanctioned post should remain in the area.
Meanwhile, the EC has also directed that two police officers considered close to the Badal family should not be seen in the area, from where they had already been transferred.
State Chief Electoral Officer Kusumjit Sidhu had reportedly told the government that Joginder Singh, currently posted as Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-III) in Ludhiana and Harinder Singh,Station House Officer of Ludhiana Sadar police station, should not be seen in Moga, even in case of their transfer.
During the previous Lok Sabha elections, while Harinder was the SHO of Lambi police station,Joginder was posted in Bathinda. There had been several complaints against them,as they were considered to be close to the Badals. According to sources,Joginder was on security duty for Sukhbir Singh Badal when he was not the deputy chief minister.
In the meeting, the DCs have been reportedly told not to issue any more arms licenses. The DCs and SSPs have also been asked not to attend at any function of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal after the code of conduct comes into force around December 20,the EC is expected to declare the election schedule.
Moreover, around 18 police officers, including SSP Fategarh Sahib R S Khatra, are likely to be changed by the government,as they are in the list of policemen who were changed last time by the EC during parliamentary elections, said an officer.
