Rapid transport plan ready,awaits ‘official’ presentation

Months after completing the Comprehensive Mobility Plan for the Mass Rapid Transport System project,the UT Administration is still dragging its feet on pursuing the matter further.

Months after completing the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) project,the UT Administration is still dragging its feet on pursuing the matter further.

Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) had submitted the CMP to the Administration in July.

The report was to be “officially” presented to the representatives of all the state governments involved,including Haryana,Himachal Pradesh and Punjab,in a core committee meeting.

In all these months,that ‘auspicious’ date has not yet arrived.

More than a decade has been spent on planning and streamlining the transport system in Chandigarh.

In fact,several studies on specifically the MRTS have been carried out since 1997,but remain on paper only.

While the Administration had claimed that the first phase of the Metro would come up in five years,this seems to be mere lip-service.

“The project will take its own time as several states are involved in it. A lot depends on the management of the project,” said a senior official of the UT Administration.
