The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rain, gusty winds, thunderstorms, dust storms, and lightning in isolated parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh till May 7, even as the region recorded a sharp drop in temperature on Friday.
Wind speeds are expected to range between 40–50 kmph during May 2–5, and subside to 30–40 kmph on May 6 and 7, as per IMD’s Friday weather bulletin.
Due to the ongoing western disturbance, the lowest minimum temperature in the region was recorded at Yamunanagar in Haryana at 17.6°C on Friday, down from the previous day’s 20.9°C. Bhiwani in Haryana registered the highest minimum temperature at 23.6°C.
Sirsa was the hottest in Haryana on May 1, recording a maximum temperature of 41.2°C.
The average minimum temperature in Haryana fell by 6 degrees compared to Thursday and remained 2.5°C below normal. Gusty winds blowing at 50–60 kmph on Thursday and widespread rainfall contributed to the dip in temperature.
Light to moderate rainfall is likely throughout the week, with overall rainfall expected to be near normal to above normal in the region, as per the IMD.
During the past 24 hours, Jhajjar in Haryana received the highest rainfall at 68 mm, followed by Gurgaon (44 mm) and Hisar (40.6 mm). In Punjab, Faridkot saw the highest rainfall at 44.2 mm, followed by Pathankot (29 mm) and Amritsar (24.8 mm).
According to Dr Surinder Kaur, IMD director, Chandigarh, thunderstorms, gusty winds are witnessed during May and June due to Western disturbances. “We have observed such weather in the past years as well. The high wind speed, rain do result in a dip in the temperature as is being observed in the region,” Kaur told The Indian Express.
On May 1, Bathinda was the hottest in Punjab, with the mercury level going up to 41.2°C. However, by Friday morning, its minimum temperature had dropped to 18.6°C, a fall of 5.6°C in 24 hours. Ropar recorded the highest minimum temperature in Punjab at 22.3°C. On average, Punjab saw a dip in temperature of 5.6°C over 24 hours and remains 2.1°C below normal.
