Radio auto hits low-fuel speedbreaker

With the state government failing to set up adequate gas stations, the much-hyped radio auto scheme has failed to take-off.

Launched a fortnight ago by the Administrator of Chandigarh,General (Retd) S F Rodrigues, the radio autos were supposed to hit the road on September 1. The lone operator,Tri-City Tours and Travels, has refused to start the service without adequate supply of fuel.

“The Administration had assured us that concrete measures would be taken to ensure adequate supply of fuel. But the Administration failed to do so,” said Colonel (retired) V S Dhillon, managing director of Tri-City Tour and Travels.

“Everybody is aware of the LPG shortage. There are only two gas stations catering to the entire city and the nearby areas,” he added.

The city has been reeling under LPG shortage for over a month now. The two new gas stations, proposed for sectors 21 and 38 West, are yet to be completed.

The fate of the project now depends on setting up new gas stations.

“According to the Administration, refueling centres will be set up in the next two weeks. But this seems to be uncertain,as setting up a new station requires at least three to four months,” said Dhillon. “So far,no work has been initiated on the two proposed gas station sites. In such a condition,we are not in a position to announce the date when the autos will hit the roads.”

The operator had plans to start the service with ten autos on September 1 and extend the figure to 100 within three months. Contrary to what the Administration had claimed,Tri-City Tour and Travels is the only operator which came forward for the scheme.
