Punjab: Forecast casts cloud over melas

Even in March last year, the melas were affected by cloudy weather and light showers. The two melas are held twice every year: in March and September.

PREDICTIONS of thunderstorms and showers on March 18 and 19 have cast a cloud on PAU’s Kisan Mela and GADVASU’s Pashu Palan Mela scheduled on the dates. The are fears that the two melas will go the way of the ones held in September 2014, when they were washed away by rain.

Even in March last year, the melas were affected by cloudy weather and light showers. The two melas are held twice every year: in March and September.

Dr Harish Verma, director, Extension Education, GADVASU, and co-ordinator of the Pashu Palan Mela, said some arrangements have been made this year.

“Till a week ago, weather forecasts had shown clear skies on March 18 and 19 but now cloudy weather is being predicted on the dates. We have our fingers crossed as we cannot change the dates of the mela. We have, however, done water-proofing at a few strategic points. We expect thunderstorm with light showers so we hope things will turn out fine,” he said.
