Maharashtra were disqualified on disciplinary grounds and hosts Punjab were awarded the semi-final match of the Cooch Behar at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Monday.
Controversy blew-up when the visitors refused to take the field after they were not allowed to substitute a player during the match. The controversy began when Maharashtra’s several appeals for bad light were turned down by the on field umpires.
Resuming from the overnight score of 80 for 8,Maharashtra’s Sunil Yadav (35 no) and Sandeep Adole (29) added 13 runs to the overnight score after they were bowled out for 90. And when Maharashtra came out to bowl, one of their player Sunil Yadav, who earlier appealed against bad light, had a verbal altercation with the umpires. Subsequently,he was sent out of the field for showing indiscipline.
Later,Maharashtra team wanted a substitute fielder in place of Yadav but the umpires refused as Yadav was sent out for reasons other than an injury. Maharashtra continued to play with 10 players for an over before refusing to take the field during the match.
The on field umpires,Varinder Sharma and Vilash Bandiwdekar, after holding discussions with officials, awarded the match to Punjab. Punjab pacer Kamal Passi finished with a five-wicket haul. In reply,Punjab were nine for no loss before the controversy emerged.
