In a suspected case of drug overdose, two brothers, aged 26 and 25, were found dead Thursday near a water channel in their village in Punjab’s Fazilka district, the police said.

Both the deceased used to run a small stationery-cum-mobile repair shop in the village, the police said.

Their bodies were found about a kilometre away from their house in Telupura village, said neighbours, adding that the men have been on habit-forming drugs for a long time which could be the cause of the deaths.

The incident happened on a day when Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was taking part in the biggest cycle rally against drugs in Ludhiana.

Jwala Singh, the village sarpanch, said that the men were under the habit of consuming some tablets and at times even bhaang. “We don’t know what type of intoxication they did in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. The way their bodies were found near the water outlet appeared that drug overdose must have been the cause of the deaths,” he said.

Sources said that Omprakash, the father of the deceased, who is a paramedical staff in the state health department is an alcoholic and recently had been operated for liver infection.

He said his sons had gone to the civil hospital on Wednesday night to buy some tablets.

Jwala Singh said that they are not keen on any inquiry into the deaths but demanded serious measures from the government to end the drug menace. “It is a tragic day in the village when both sons of a family died the same day,” he said.

Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar said it was not a time for a political blame game but to work together seriously against drugs. “One needs to see the state of affairs in Punjab where children are falling prey to drugs. In this case, two brothers in Telupura village along with their parents fell prey to drugs. So we need to look at the social structure and think seriously to control this menace,” Jakhar said.

On Thursday morning, he posted on X, “How many more deaths before we leave politics aside, sit together and sincerely work on a solution? Two more real brothers from my neighbouring village Telupura died of a drug overdose this morning,” he shared.
