Punjab and Haryana HC takes suo motu notice of Amritsar firing incident, summons DGP

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday took suo motu cognizance of an incident in Amritsar in which a man allegedly died by suicide after grabbing the firearm of a Personal Security Officer (PSO) assigned to a sitting HC judge.

The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal, acted after reviewing news reports published in two daily newspapers.

According to reports, on Sunday, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was accompanying a judge who had come to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Suddenly, a man snatched the ASI’s pistol and fatally shot himself. The individual who committed suicide has yet to be identified.

In its observation, the division bench noted, “There is definitely a lapse in security, and therefore, the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, is directed to appear before the court via video conferencing tomorrow at 10 am.”

Meanwhile, Saurav Khurana, Additional Advocate General for Punjab, has been instructed to seek updates on the investigation. The matter is scheduled for hearing on Wednesday.
