PU doctor devises new treatment for pyorrhea

Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital,Panjab University, has devised a treatment method for pyorrhea which is cost effective, saves time and does not require a surgery to be performed. Pyorrhea is a bacterial infection that affects the gum tissues and if left untreated, can subsequently lead to loss of teeth. The symptoms include swelling and bleeding of gums and bad breath.

The treatment, called Subgingival Irrigation System Therapy, has been developed by the principal of the Institute,Dr Ashish Jain. This research was recently presented in a conference of the International Academy of Dental Research held at Brazil.

The new method is an alternative to the surgical protocol rather than a complete replacement. There are different stages of this disease, ranging from mild, moderate to severe. The last two categories require a Periodontal Flap Surgery. According to Jain, the problem with pyorrhea is that it is a painless disease, and many patients, prefer not getting the treatment done, than going through the painful and expensive surgical procedure. But if pyorrhea reaches a severe stage,it can lead to loss of teeth.

He says that Subgingival Irrigation is a specially designed equipment with the help of which the teeth are cleaned in the form of irrigating dental pockets by using certain concentrations of antibacterial. Till now this equipment was used for maintenance therapy as it was used after the surgery for the disease so that the disease does not catch the teeth after the surgery.

During the research for Subgingival Irrigation, about 45 patients were kept under surveillance so that the bacterial infection could be removed. Jain said that during the study,he treated the patients of pyorrhea with the Subgingival Irrigation therapy for three months along with some medicines. “The results showed that after the three months of treatment with this new methodology, the patients showed no signs of pyorrhea. Now all those patients do not require any expensive surgery and can be treated in just three months,” he said.

According to Jain, the cost of treatment of the disease with the Subgingival Irrigation therapy is much cheaper than the surgery. Depending on the stage of the disease, the cost of the surgery can range from Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000. However, with this new methodology, the entire treatment will cost about one-fourth of the amount currently being spent.

Jain said that pyorrhea is a commonly found disease in the Indian population with about 78 percent of the population suffering from it. Some people get to know about the disease at the initial stage while many others never notice the problem till it becomes severe.
