Tensions rose at the Sector 17 plaza when the Panjab University unit of Students For Society (SFS) wanted to burn an effigy of UT Administration and PEC University of Technology management against the imposition of Section 144 on the campus.

The students had a verbal tiff with the police when they were stopped from carrying on their protest and burning the effigy. The students alleged that it was suppression of their democratic rights and an attempt to disrupt a peaceful dharna against the management’s arbitrary promotion policy.

“Under the pretext of violence,Section 144 was imposed, while the truth is that not a single student has been convicted for violence,” said Suchinder Pal Singh,a research scholar of University’s Economic Department. Pradeep Singh,President of SFS PEC unit alleged that PEC management not only used police force on peaceful protesters but also threatened to expel the students from the institute.

Recently, eleven students who were protesting against denial of promotion to first year students were arrested from PEC.
