Protesters slam govt action against Ajit newspaper’s managing editor
Prominent farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal and Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia participated in the rally, which began from Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall and culminated at the Deputy Commissioner office.

Various political, social service and farmer organisations Saturday staged a protest rally against the AAP government in Punjab for taking action against Barjinder Singh Hamdard, the managing editor of the Ajit group.
Prominent farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal and Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia participated in the rally, which began from Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall and culminated at the Deputy Commissioner office.
On reaching the premises of the DC office, the leaders flayed the government and said that the government is adopting repressive policies against the press. They alleged that when Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann could not make Ajit group toe his line, then the CM resorted to tactics such as exerting financial pressure and orchestrating negotiations. However, when Mann’s all tactics proved unsuccessful, he resorted to vigilance action against him, said Majithia.
Farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal, of Bharatiya Kisan Union Rajewal, said that the government is adopting repressive policies. They employ various methods, including persuasion, punishment and division, to suppress their adversaries. Rajewal emphasised that the government is attempting to curb media freedom. These practices are detrimental to a thriving democracy.
Recently, the Ajit group had alleged that the Mann government is desperate to take action against Hamdard and has been sending one after another vigilance notices to him.
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau had initiated an investigation into Rs 300-crore project of Jang-E-Azadi set up in Kartarpur during the tenure of SAD-BJP government.
Earlier, Hamdard had resigned as member secretary of the Jang-e-Azadi Memorial Foundation and chairperson of its executive committee. In his resignation, he had blamed the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government for maligning the name of the memorial by sending police and vigilance teams there.
