To regulate traffic and prevent chaos on roads,the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to prevent illegal access to the national highways.
In an affidavit filed during the resumed hearing of a petition concerning traffic regulation,NHAI Project Director,Sonepat,Vipnesh Sharma said there were 273 unauthorised entry points on the NH between Panipat and Delhi and he had been able to close 94 of them till now.
Justice Rajive Bhalla asked him to file an affidavit with respect to the funding for construction of flyovers,underpasses and foot overbridges on the stretch between Kilometer 29 and Kilometer 86,under the World Bank loan. The court took a strong note of the non-furnishing of information by the states of Punjab and Haryana. Punjab and Haryana were directed to notify,implement and display speed limits on national and state highways but no affidavit is forthcoming. In addition,no response is forthcoming about the medical services available on state highways, he said.
The Amritsar deputy commissioner,superintendent of police and municipal commissioner have been asked to convene a meeting to streamline traffic in the city and remove encroachments to provide for parking space.
