Power Mix

Nutritious recipes for women, free culinary workshops and organic food tasting sessions — the run-up to Women’s Day offers food for thought.

Ever tried Magnetic Ladoos? Highly recommended for expectant mothers, they aren’t a gimmicky product on offer by a local halwai or iron-packed sweets available on late-night teleshopping channels. The dish,a healthy mix of ingredients like spinach, jaggery, desiccated coconut and rice flakes,is an innovation of Apoorva Tandon,a student of the Department of Food and Nutrition at the Government Home Science College. Tandon was one of the winners at a cookery contest organised by the college.

With Women’s Day around the corner, innovative dishes using nutritious recipes were invited from students with an aim to encourage healthy eating among women. “The women of today are always multi-tasking and can often neglect their diet. We wanted youngsters to think out of the box for tasty yet nutritious dishes that target women’s health,” said Dr Nirupa Marwaha, head of the college’s food and nutrition department. The recipes, available on request from the college, are meant for slimming diets, kitty party menus and nutritious snacks for fitter and healthier girls, pregnant women and homemakers. The line-up sprung many surprises with several students incorporating soya in their dishes. “Conscious of their diet, most women tend to skip protein-rich food and soya is a good substitute,” remarked post-graduate student Kritika Mathur. Realising that women love to dig into tangy street food,Mathur put forth her version of golgappas with nutritious juices to go with it,which won her the first prize. “Instead of tamarind chutney,I have combined natural fruit juices like pomegranate and litchi with coconut water, black tea and apple and guava with mint,” informed Mathur. Soyabean kachori, multigrain papri, palak chaat were the other dishes that impressed with their nutritive yet tasty combinations.

Also timing a free workshop for women to enhance their culinary skills as a ‘Women’s Day treat’ is the city’s popular baker Nikhil Mittal. “Cooking can be more than just making food for day-to-day meals. It can transform routine into a passion or even a career,” remarked Mittal, who has rolled out free workshops at his Nik Baking and Cooking Institute (NBCI),in Sector 5,Panchkula till March 7. The aim, says Mittal,is to encourage women to try new cuisines and be able to rustle up gourmet meals at home. “I find homemakers intimidated with international flavours. Through this workshop we are giving them a chance to learn anything from Mediterranean salads to Belgian chocolates with a special three-hour chef’s class,” informed Mittal, who is also offering guidance for women looking to open their own enterprise like a bakery or even a gelato outlet.

With a diploma in French cuisine from the Le Cordon Bleu, entrepreneur and chef Geetika Sood loves to give basic recipes a new twist. A regular user of organic fare,Sood has now been invited by Fab India in Sector 9 to host a day-long organic food tasting session on March 10. “When I meet women my age,I find that many are apprehensive about switching over to organic ingredients with the fear that they might not taste as good. I am looking to change that mindset,” says Sood, who will dish out free samples of organic red rice risotto with spinach and all organic seasonings. The menu will also offer organic whole-wheat spinach pasta with organic sundried tomatoes and whole-wheat bread packed with organic flax seeds. “I am always experimenting and the aim is to retain nutrition without compromising on taste,” says Sood.

Good health for women seems to be the message going out this Women’s Day. Also offering free skincare tips and consultation to lady golfers, who are under the sun’s constant glare,is Fortis healthcare will be hosting a special beauty clinic at the Chandigarh Golf Club with Dr AB Prabhu,a specialist in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, today.
