Policeman’s son among two held for snatchings

The arrests were made in less than 24 hours after the accused reportedly snatched a purse containing Rs 7,500,a mobile phone,ATM card,PAN card and other valuables and documents from Mohali-based Sukhpreet Jaizi on Thursday evening,Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar told Newsline.

While Jagdeep Singh alias Sunny (20) is son of Head Constable Gurnam Singh posted at Police Lines in Sector 26,Chandigarh,and resident of Sector 47,Chandigarh,Gobind Sagar (19) is a resident of Sector 50-C,Chandigarh,and his father Jarnail Singh was an interior decorator,said DSP (City-I) Raka Ghirra.

Sunny’s paternal uncle Nirmal Singh is also a Head Constable posted in Sector 34,Chandigarh,it is learnt.

During preliminary interrogation,the arrested youths confessed to have committed at least 13 snatchings in different parts of Chandigarh and Mohali during the recent past. “In Chandigarh,they struck in Sector 42,44,27,28,15 and 21 while Phase 3B2,IV,VII and X were their striking areas in Mohali,” said Ghirra.

It was on the basis of the motorcycle registration number,which Jaizi told the police that the youths were arrested at a police checkpost near petrol pump in Phase II here. A laptop and Jaizi’s mobile phone were recovered from them,DSP revealed.

Jaizi,in her early-30s,of Phase X here had gone to Phase 3B2 market for domestic purchases at around 5.45 pm when two bikers snatched her handbag containing her purse and mobile phone.

Acting swiftly on Jaizi’s complaint,the local police had sounded an alert and flashed the motorcycle number all around,following which it was intercepted at a checkpost.

Both the arrested youths were produced before a local court on Friday evening,which remanded them to a day’s police custody for further custodial interrogation,the DSP said.

Biker assaulted,robbed
A motorcyclist was assaulted and robbed of Rs 35,000 cash and two mobile phones by four youths on Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway-21 in Dappar near Lalru last evening. Gurnam Singh of Dappar told police that he was on his way home around 7.30 pm when his motorcycle tyre flattened in Dappar.

“Soon,four youths arrived there on motorcycles and started assaulting me without any provocation. They robbed me of cash and my mobile phone,” he said after getting treatment in a local hospital. Though the police have registered a case,the robbers are absconding.
