With the arrest of four persons, the Chandigarh Police on Monday claimed to have solved the double murder case in which two security guards were bludgeoned to death on May 1.
The accused have been identified as Rinku Verma alias Raju,Ricky Sharma,Devi Shankar Verma (residents of Mauli Jagran),and Shamshad alias Lambu,a resident of Hallomajra.
The police said the accused killed Gurdial Singh and Sucha Singh,as they had stopped them from stealing water pipes. Their bodies were found near the new link road between Hallomajra and Panchkula.
UT SSP S S Srivastva said two accused were arrested from the forest area near Hallomajra.
The two security guards were on duty when these four accused came to steal water pipes around 11.30 pm on April 30. The four had a rehri and a spade with them, Srivastva said. The security guards raised an alarm after which they fled, leaving their rehri and spade behind. About one-and-a-half hour later, the four returned to steal the pipes. The guards again spotted them. This time they gave them a chase till the accused entered thick forest.
In the forest, one of them hit Gurdial with a heavy stone. A scuffle ensued during which Gurdial and Sucha were attacked with blunt weapons and bludgeoned to death. Later, their bodies were thrown near the canal, the SSP said.
A local court on Monday sent the accused to three-day police custody.
The four accused do not know the two thieves the police had arrested after a tip-off by Gurdial and Sucha on April 23 and 26,the police said.
