Following encounter, police arrest 5 armed men, say possible grenade attack in Ludhiana averted

(representative image)An encounter between police and armed men in Sidhwan Bet area of Ludhiana Rural ended with the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of a live grenade, pistol, and cartridges, Saturday.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP, Ludhiana Rural) Ankur Gupta said that a possible grenade attack in Ludhiana was averted.
According to officials, the Jagraon CIA staff had received a tip-off about a black Mahindra Scorpio carrying armed men suspected of planning criminal activity. Acting on the information, a police team intercepted the vehicle near village Jandi. The suspects, instead of stopping, tried to flee, causing their vehicle to crash into a roadside tree.
A police personnel also hit the windshield of the vehicle with a stick in order to make the accused stop for checking. The front number plate of the vehicle was missing, while the accused had covered the rear numberplate with mud.
“After the vehicle crashed into a tree one of the men immediately opened fire at the police. The bullet hit the turban of CIA staff officer Balwinder Singh, narrowly missing him,” an officer said. Police returned fire, injuring suspect Amjad Masih in the right leg. He and his four accomplices were subsequently apprehended.
The injured accused was taken to Jagraon Civil Hospital for treatment.
SSP Gupta stated that when frisked, the police seized live grenade, an illegal pistol, and bullets from the accused. A bomb disposal team has been called on to dispose of the hand grenade.
He added that the accused, who were identified as — Arjun Singh, alias Taj alias Chattu, Amjid Masih alias Benny, Sajan, Balraj Singh and Manpreet Singh, belong to Tarn Taran. Amjid was injured in right leg in police fire, SSP said.
The recovery from the armed men includes: 86 P hand grenade, 32-bore pistol, a magazine and 1 live round, and a Scorpio vehicle.
Further investigation is underway to know the motive of the accused.
