PM to inaugurate Rs 21,500-cr refinery near Bhatinda tomorrow

While Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will be present on the ocassion along with his cabinet colleagues,state Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh is not likely to attend the function.

The Rs 21,500-crore Guru Gobind Singh Refinery near Bathinda — the largest investment Punjab has seen since Independence — will formally be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on April 28.

While Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will be present on the ocassion along with his cabinet colleagues,state Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh is not likely to attend the function. Amarinder is expected to go to Delhi for a couple of days on Friday for pre-scheduled meetings,said sources. Other Congress leaders are expected to attend the function.

Meanwhile,security has been strengthened for the PM’s visit. Around 3,000 police personnel have been deployed in the Malwa area,including four SSPs,SPs and DSPs. IGP (Bathinda Zone) N S Dhillon will monitor the preparations.

On Saturday,the Prime Minister will land at the Bathinda airport,from where he take a chopper to the refinery. The is government is also making arrangements to take 300 bus loads of people to the ceremony — arrangements have been made to accommodate 15,000 people at the venue.

The refinery,having a processing capacity of 9 mt of crude a year (180,000 barrels per day),is a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Mittal Energy — a subsidiary of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal’s company.
