Pilot project launched to collect garbage from doorsteps

The pilot project for door-to-door collection of garbage was started by the Municipal Corporation in Sector 22 on Monday.

The pilot project for door-to-door collection of garbage was started by the Municipal Corporation in Sector 22 on Monday. Under this, garbage would be collected and sent directly to the garbage processing plant. Earlier, garbage was being collected at the Sehaj Safai Kendras (SSKs) before being taken to the plant or the dumping ground.

The project was flagged off by Mayor Raj Bala Malik. Municipal Commissioner V P Singh was present along with other officers of the civic body. The project has been launched for three months on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Instead of garbage being collected by private persons, manpower has been deployed by the Municipal Corporation through a contractor. While it was decided that the first preference in employment would be given to the collectors who were already deployed, they have refused to join. A protest was also held outside the MC office against the decision. Some teething problems were witnessed on the first day with garbage not being collected from all places.

After a case was filed in the High Court by a school, the process of the project was initiated. It was said the SSKs were causing much stench in the areas where these were located. The management of the garbage processing plant had also stated that the garbage they were receiving was old as it was not picked up regularly from the garbage bins and SSKs.

Tractor-trolleys along with manpower were deployed for door-to-door collection of garbage for immediate onward transportation to the garbage processing plant or dumping ground. The residents were educated not to deposit waste at any other place, including the SSK of Sector 22.

Pamphlets were distributed to create awareness amongst the residents.
