In what could bring relief to kidney patients across the country, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is studying the effects of new drugs which are known to slow down the progress of kidney disorders and thereby add years to the life of the patients.
Patients suffering from chronic kidney disorders are at a higher risk of heart attacks and it is very important to prevent the disease from progressing. The new drugs which have shown positive results in European countries basically target specific hormones, said Dr Vivekanand Jha,a professor in the Department of Nephrology of PGIMER.
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT),Government of India, has sanctioned a research grant for studying the differential reactions of over 1000 patients who are being given these drugs. The effects of the drugs will be monitored over a period of five years as all the patients have a different genetic make up and thus their bodies respond differently to these drugs. The study is aimed at studying the mechanisms and genetic systems of the patients according to their different reactions to the drugs.
Doctors from the Department of Nephrology are also making a significant contribution in framing the guidelines for nephrologists all over the world to treat a unique condition in kidney patients called glomerulonephritis. 25 per cent of kidney patients are at the risk of developing glomerulonephritis. It is a type of disease wherein Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR),which is the flow rate of filtered fluid through the kidneys, goes down, leaking protein in urine. Patients complain of blood in urine and swelling in the area.
