The School of Public Health,PGIMER,organised environment awareness activities to disseminate information on sustainable and eco-friendly technologies,like rainwater harvesting,and to reduce,reuse,recycle and recover (4Rs) and how to follow these practices in daily life.
The programme was inaugurated by the representative of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology. A workshop on the theme of Biodiversity and Sustainable Practices was organised by expert lecturers on food waste (Dr Ravinda Khaiwal,PGIMER),resource recycling (Dr Suman Mor,Punjab University),water conservation (Dr Sushil Kansal,UICET,Punjab University).
Dr Ravindra Khaiwal,Assistant Professor of Environment Health,School of Public Health,PGIMER mentioned that every year humans waste around 1.3 billion tonnes of food,while one in every seven people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of five die daily from hunger.
He stressed on the adoption of zero food-wastage habit to save our natural valuable resources and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,narrowing the hunger gap,which prevents the loss of biodiversity. The guest of honour was Surender Paul from the Chandigarh Meteorology Department. Local fruit and medical saplings were distributed to the audience and PGI staff.
