In her ballet production Sankalp,Dr Samira Koser tries to make the youth aware of the world around them
Directing a mixed bag of students on stage, aged between four to 44,is no easy task. Agrees Dr Samira Koser,a well-known Kathak dancer from the city and a fine exponent of the Jaipur Gharana, who has taken the task upon herself.
Dr Koser,in association with the Pracheen Kala Kendra and Moti Ram Arya Senior Secondary Model School,Chandigarh is set to present a ballet titled Sankalp, with a huge cast of over 45 dancers. More than the mammoth number of performers, the challenge was to put together different age groups for a single performance, says Dr Koser, who has conceptualised, produced and choreographed the ballet. All the performers are students of the Kendra, learning various dance forms under the tutelage of Dr Koser.
Sankalp literally means a commitment. I have tried to put forth a message of peace through this ballet. The dance drama is about todays youth who may fall prey to various temptations around them but are also capable of transforming society through their power, energy, strength and dynamism, explains the danseuse, who has kept terror attacks as a backdrop of the show. Students who come to me are very indifferent to what is happening around them. This is my way of sensitising them, encouraging them to make dance a part of their lives, says Koser. The ballet uses various styles such as Kathak,Bharatnatyam and Odissi. Sankalp is a combination of choreographed dance sequences in various styles. It begins with a tandav, going on to present classic styles of dance but the choreography is very contemporary, says Dr Koser.
The dancers come from different backgrounds as well. I have a number of professionals like doctors, engineers and teachers among my students. There are also groups of mothers and their daughters who would be on stage together. The last sequence was the toughest as all my dancers would be on stage at the same time, says Dr Koser, who will not be performing in the ballet. I wanted my students to get all the attention. I am working on my next solo performance but thats for later, signs off Koser.
Sankalp will be performed on August 30 at Moti Ram Arya Senior Secondary Model School,Sector 27,Chandigarh.
