With the work to provide basic amenities at Deep Complex,Hallomajra, hanging fire, despite the directions of Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil, the Administration officials were called by him for a meeting on Tuesday. Bahujan Samaj Party leaders met the Administrator for the fifth time on Tuesday to discuss the issue.
The demand to provide facilities like water and sewerage connection at Deep Complex had been doing the rounds for some time. With the complex having been constructed outside lal dora, houses were not regularised. A demand had been raised that with a substantial population residing in the area, basic amenities be provided.
At a meeting of the House held two months back, the agenda to provide water and sewerage connection was passed. However,it was observed that the Administration had not granted permission to provide sewerage connection in the area. As a result, even water connection could not be provided.
The officials had also stated that there would be a need to demolish a few houses,in case the sewerage lines had to be laid. This was not agreeable to everyone and the need for an alternative was highlighted.
BSP convener Haffiz Anwar-ul-Haq said,We have met the Administrator five times to discuss the issue. The officials are not following his directions and objections are raised every time, he said.
A lot of politicking has been witnessed over the issue. BSP councillor Jannat Jahan had,in the House meeting held in April, condemned the Congress for giving credit to local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal for the approval of the work.
Residents complain about water shortage during Mayor inspection,JE suspended
Residents of Sector 56 highlighted the poor water supply in the area as Mayor Subhash Chawla conducted an inspection on Tuesday. It was reportedly found that while the water storage tanks of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh were full,it was not reaching the houses in the locality. Water pressure in taps were found to be low. Only low height taps could supply water to the ground floor, while it could not reach the upper storey.
Chawla said,I am very upset with the prevailing situation. While we were told that there was no problem of water supply, the ground reality is different. The residents are facing an acute problem. There is lack of management. Despite water being available, the residents are not receiving it. I would be visiting other areas in the coming days. The stand posts installed in the area were also inspected. The Mayor has instructed the officials to strengthen the water supply system.
The Mayor also visited Manimajra and instructed that the internal roads of the area be made of concrete and the paver blocks be removed. A section of residents have opposed installation of paver blocks on roads alleging that no heavy vehicles can enter the locality due to it.
Meanwhile,at Gobindpura in Manimajra, the drainage system was found to be in a sorry state. The Mayor has instructed for proposal to be made for overhauling the system and the non-functional streetlights in the area be repaired. Deputy Mayor Satish Kainth also accompanied Chawla.
Following the visit of the Mayor to Sector 56,Junior Engineer Gurnam Singh was placed under suspension by the MC chief engineer for not getting a non-functional tubewell repaired. The MC Engineers Association condemned the suspension stating that the JE was being made a scapegoat even though the work for maintenance was given to a contractor. The members of the association demanded that the suspension be revoked. It was alleged that he was not given a hearing.
