Credited with shattering the language barrier with a click,a teacher from Patiala’s Punjabi University has got copyright for his software that not only translates text from Hindi to Punjabi but also interprets it.

Vishal Goyal, assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science, said he developed the software as part of his research project that was completed under the guidance of G S Lehal. “My guide suggested that I should develop this software, which will be of great help to students, publishers and journalists,” he told The Indian Express.

Claiming that the project’s accuracy was up to 95 per cent,34-year-old Goyal said he started work on the software in 2006 and was able to complete it by 2010. The copyright has been granted after more than a year by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development’s Copyright Registrar office.

Working with the Punjabi University since 2005,the assistant professor said the Union Ministry of Information Technology had paid Rs 36 lakh to IIIT-Hyderabad to develop a similar software. “However, their product has about 60 per cent accuracy. But my software also interprets the text, which is an important tool while translating proverbs and idioms,” he claimed.

Goyal’s software is available for free and can be accessed from the website h2p.learnpunjabi.org,where you can even translate an entire website by just typing its URL. He said he has also added English to Punjabi translation link, but more work is required on it. “We will continue to improve the site with active feedback from our users,” he said, adding that this is the first software in Punjab to get a copyright.

The software will also help in ending language barriers,as two persons — one who does not know Punjabi and another who cannot understand Hindi — can easily communicate with each other. “The project enables one to read in Punjabi a mail written in Hindi. This can be a great learning aid for students of Punjab, who source study material in Hindi from universities of other states,” said Goyal.
