Parties assess losses

In the aftermath of the Lok Sabha elections,all the parties are weighing their strengths and weaknesses in order to prepare for the Vidhan Sabha elections next year.

The Congress fared badly in constituencies of some top ministers such as Birender Singh,Randeep Singh Surjewala,Savitri Jindal,Mange Ram Gupta or the party chief Phool Chand Mullana.

But the group to fare very badly was the INLD-BJP alliance,as it failed to win a single seat. BJP even failed to retain the only seat in Sonepat Parliamentary constituency it had won in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.

The newly formed Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) managed to survive by winning the Hisar parliamentary seat,on the basis of the performance of their veteran leader Bhajan Lal. The party’s performance otherwise was rather disappointing in the rest of the state. HJC has now begun preparations for the Vidhan Sabha polls. HJC president Kuldeep Bishnoi said action will be taken against leaders who indulged in dissident activities.

The real gainer in the just- concluded Lok Sabha polls was the BSP. It did not win any seat,it managed to increase its overall votes percentage to 15.73 per cent,which was three times more than what the party got in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls.

The Congress managed to gain lead in 58 of the 90 Vidhan Sabha constituencies of the state. Congress had won 67 seats in the 2005 Vidhan Sabha polls.
