Panic grips in Ambala cantonmenttt as flooded Tangri threatens settlements
The rain water in the channel starts flowing above the banks, that not only floods these localities but also affects low-lying areas of the town where water remains accumulated for several days.

Panic has gripped thousands of residents on the eastern side of the Ambala Cantt township as their houses situated on the banks of river Tangri face flood risk.
The Tangri river is currently flooded as it has started flowing above the danger mark after the rainwater is released from the foothills of the Shivalik mountains. The flooded water enters the houses constructed in the embankment area. In previous years, water has not only entered the houses but also touched the roofs. According to a survey, more than 1800 families are living in such houses.
Most of the residents are shifted to safer places by the administration after receiving signs of flooding of this seasonal rivulet. Earlier, the channel of the river was quite wide and had the capacity to absorb the flood water during the rainy season, but now the width of the channel has shrunk to a small drain. The rainwater in the channel starts flowing above the banks, that not only floods these localities but also affects low-lying areas of the town where water remains accumulated for several days.
According to the departmental sources, the bandh is being strengthened to plug the holes made by rodents, mice and other reptiles. They hoped that the previous year’s situation would not crop up this time. Last year, the irrigation department had taken alternative measures to strengthen the bandh but it developed cracks leading to the flood water entering the localities.
Some residents said that the department had constructed a bandh last year but they had to bear the loss after river water flooded their houses. They said this year the same exercise was being repeated this time too.
