Over 12000 from city write UGC-NET

Over 12,500 students from different parts of the region appeared for the UGC NET examination for subjects of humanities and social sciences held at over 25 centres in the city today.

Over 12,500 students from different parts of the region appeared for the UGC NET examination for subjects of humanities and social sciences held at over 25 centres in the city today.

Apart from the departments of the Panjab University, test was also held at DAV College in Sector 10,SGGS College in Sector 26 and a few schools of the city.

The NET examination saw a 30 per cent spurt in the number of candidates this year as compared to the last year when around 9,200 had taken the test. Around 40 students were issued duplicate roll numbers in the morning at the Panjab University. “We opened the office in the Arts Block-II around 6 am but students came around 7 am and their documents were attested on the spot,” said Prof Nahar Singh, coordinator,UGC NET.

Though the test was conducted smoothly,Singh said in the view of the increasing number of candidates,it had become a tedious affair to manage such a large number with limited centres.

Meanwhile, students had mixed a reaction for the examination with some finding Part-I confusing due to negative marking which has been introduced for the first time by the UGC. This left many students in a fix whether to take the ‘risk’ of answering the question they were unsure about. Many candidates found Paper I lengthy due to which they were left with little choice but to rush through the test. “Paper III,being the main part was lengthy and I had expected it to be so. The questions tested our ability to think out of the box and how opinionated we were,” said Amit, who appeared for Mass Communication.
