Orange, yellow alerts for heavy rain issued in several districts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh as monsoon advances across Northern plains

Yellow alerts have been issued in eight districts on June 25 and 17 districts on June 27, signalling continued caution.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for heavy rainfall in several districts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, signalling the likelihood of intense weather activity between June 25 and 30, as the southwest monsoon, after entering Pathankot on Sunday, has advanced further across northern plains, mainly in several parts of both state.

IMD, Chandigarh, Director Surinder Pal said, “The conditions are highly favourable for further advancement of monsoon, which reached in Punjab on Sunday from Pathankot, into more areas of both states over the next 48 hours, ushering in widespread rainfall after a prolonged spell of dry heat. ”

According to the IMD, a wet week is expected ahead. “Light to moderate rains are expected at a few places on June 24. Widespread rainfall is likely on June 25, 26 and 27, followed by continued showers at several locations on June 28, 29 and 30 across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. This rainfall may be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated locations during the period,” the weather office said.

Significantly, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places in Punjab on June 25 and 26, and again on June 27, 29 and 30. In Haryana and Chandigarh, heavy rain is likely on June 27 to 30, with very heavy rainfall possible on June 25 and 26.

The IMD issued orange alerts for Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar and parts of Mohali in Punjab on June 25, and for Pathankot, Amritsar, Moga and Ludhiana on June 26.

Yellow alerts have been issued in eight districts on June 25 and 17 districts on June 27, signalling continued caution.

In Punjab, yellow alerts on June 25 have been issued for Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala. On June 26, it was issued for Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Firozpur, Faridkot, Fazilka, Mukhtar Sahib, Bathinda, and Barnala. On June 27, in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Moga, Ludhiana, Nawanshahr, Ludhiana, Barnala, Sangrur, Patiala, Mohali, and Fatehgarh Sahib.

On June 28, in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Ludhiana, Rupnagar, parts of Fatehgarh Sahib and Mohali.

In Haryana, orange alerts have been issued for Panchkula, Ambala and Yamunanagar on June 25, and for Ambala and Yamunanagar on June 26.

Yellow alerts have been issued across several districts from June 25 to 28 in Haryana. On June 25, in Kurukshetra, Karnal, Kaithal, Panipat, Sonipat, Rewari, Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal and Mahendergath. On June 26, in Panchkula, Kurukshetra, Palwal, Panipat, Sonipat and Sirsa. On June 27, in Panchkula, Ambala, Yamuna Nagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Kaithal, Jind, Panipat, Sonipat, Rohtak, Hisar, Bhiwani, and Charkhi Dadri. On June 28, in Panchkula, Ambala, Yamuna Nagar, Hisar, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Jhajjar, Rewari, Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal, Mewat, and Mahendragarh.

An orange alert for Chandigarh has been issued for June 25, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected.

The monsoon’s arrival has brought a much-needed respite from the searing summer temperatures.

In Punjab, the average maximum temperature has dropped by -2.4°C compared to Monday.

Currently, it is -3.9°C below normal for this time of year.

In Punjab, Bathinda recorded the highest temperature at 40°C on Tuesday.

In Haryana, a -1.6°C drop was observed in the average maximum temperature since Monday, and overall temperatures are -4.3°C below normal.

The hottest place in Haryana was Sirsa, recording 38.6°C.

As monsoon sweeps the northern plains, farmers are hopeful, but authorities are cautious.

The upcoming week is set to bring welcome rainfall for kharif crops but could also bring localised flooding, especially in hilly and low-lying regions.

With orange alerts in place, citizens are advised to stay updated on local weather bulletins and take necessary precautions during intense rainfall spells.
