Political parties in the city criticized the decision of the Congress-led government to permit 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail.

The Bharatiya Janata Party termed it an anti-trader decision. BJP leader Ramkaran Gupta said that the Congress had announced a decision that would lead to more unemployment. The decision,he said, would affect 5 crore people. BJP leaders stated that the small shops would be closed down and the shopkeepers would be forced to work in the stores.

Another BJP leader Kailash Jain said that the central government made the decision because it was working under pressure from industrial houses. A similar decision was taken by the government in November last year, but was rolled back after protests in different parts of the country.

Ajay Jagga, president of the Chandigarh Unit of the Janata Party, while condemning the decision of the government, said FDI in retail trade will be a disaster for the masses of India because the ensuing competition will not be a level playing field and that it seems to him that India is heading for another East India Company era. He said the domestic retail industry is going to be completely washed out.
