Onion prices hit Rs 100 per kg in Chandigarh: Supply scarcity and crop damage fuel surge
Damaged crops, heavy rainfall and various other reasons have been attributed to the skyrocketing prices.

Onion prices in Chandigarh surged to Rs 100 per kilogram on Sunday as limited supply continues to impact the market. Traders say they are relying on supplies from Khairthal, a small town in Rajasthan, instead of the usual onion stock from Nasik, Maharashtra.
Deepak Kumar, a wholesale trader at Sector 26 grain market, said, “There is an extreme scarcity of supply. Currently, we are getting onions from Khairthal.” Wholesale prices have jumped from Rs 24 to Rs 55 per kg, pushing retail prices to Rs 100 per kg, he added.
Kumar noted that the price spike has led to substantial losses for wholesale suppliers catering to hotels and restaurants. “I suffered a loss of Rs 21 lakh in a month due to the high prices,” he said.
Traders attribute the rise to damaged crops, heavy rainfall, and other factors. Vinod Vashisht, convener of the City Forum of Residents’ Welfare Organisations (CFORWO), pointed out that the surge is hitting household budgets hard. He criticised both state and central governments for losing focus on controlling onion prices, adding that ongoing elections in Maharashtra may have diverted attention from the issue.
