‘One fire and there would be no way to find out an employee’s contribution to his Provident Fund’

The regional office of the Employees Provident Fund,in Sector 17,which is responsible for maintaining the records of contributions of thousands of employees toward monthly provident funds working in different departments in the city and in the region,is virtually a tinder box.

A visit to the first floor of the office, where over a dozen employees sit, reveals the vulnerability of the place and the employees in the absence of any fire safety norms. With thousands of records scattered all over the seating area and bundles of files lying all over the floor, the office space is in gross violation of fire safety norms.

In fact, there is no movement space left for the employees who have to sit amid the piles of files and records. Despite the employees bringing up the issue several times with the higher ups there is no respite. “With racks of records placed in the room there is hardly any escape route for the employees if any emergency happens,” said an employee on condition of anonymity.

“There is hardly any maintenance of records and all of them are mixed up lying all over the floor in pathetic conditions. Some of them are two decades old. In case of fire, there would be no way to ascertain how much an employee has contributed towards his PF,” said another employee.

Despite repeated attempts, the regional commissioner could not be contacted for his comments.
